Content Creator vs. Professional Videographer: Which Is Right for Your Wedding Day?

At Sheldon James Photography, we’ve noticed a growing trend among modern couples: trying to decide whether to hire a content creator or a professional videographer for the big day.

It’s a valid question — and one that popped up in a recent bridal group post that inspired this blog:

“Hey brides! Would love some opinions on hiring a content creator versus a videographer. Or, if you’ve gone the content creator route, your experience.”

Here’s the honest truth: both roles can serve a purpose, but it all comes down to your wedding day vision, your priorities, and your expectations.

Let’s break it down — and offer you some real things to consider as you plan.

What does a videographer do?

A professional videographer is focused on capturing the full emotional arc of your day. They don’t just press record — they build a story. With a full arsenal of cinematic equipment, their goal is to deliver a timeless, high-quality film.

They bring:

Multiple cameras and long-range lenses to film discreetly (perfect for ceremonies)

  1. Pro audio equipment to clearly capture vows, speeches, and music

  2. A polished final product with color grading, transitions, music overlays, and voiceovers

  3. A deep understanding of pacing, storytelling, and emotional cues

A videographer is ideal if you want:

  • A full ceremony film from multiple angles

  • Toasts and vows captured clearly

  • A keepsake that feels cinematic and emotional

  • Less in-your-face filming — especially during sensitive or sacred moments

What does a content creator offer?

A content creator is typically focused on social media-ready content. They’ll follow you throughout the day with a phone or lightweight camera, grabbing those behind-the-scenes moments, aesthetic trends, and raw energy for TikToks and Reels.

They typically deliver:

A same-day or next-day highlight reel

  1. Candid moments of you and your bridal party getting ready

  2. Fun transitions, audio trends, and Instagrammable moments

  3. “Hype” videos that feel like your wedding through your bestie’s eyes

A content creator is ideal if you want:

  1. Instant content to post and relive right away

  2. A trendy take on your wedding vibe

  3. More laid-back, less formal documentation

Things to really think about before choosing

Before deciding who fits your day best, here are a few real-world questions to ask yourself:

Your guests’ experience:

  1. Will your grandparents or older family members be able to see and hear your ceremony if someone is filming with a phone nearby?

  2. Would they be distracted by someone moving around or standing close during important moments?

Religious or cultural traditions:

Is your ceremony held in a sacred space where discreet filming is required?

  1. Will a phone or handheld camera feel disruptive or out of place?

  2. Are there certain moments that shouldn’t be filmed in a casual or irreverent way?

Bridal party comfort:

How comfortable are your bridesmaids and groomsmen being followed around with a phone all day?

  1. How comfortable are your bridesmaids and groomsmen being followed around with a phone all day?

  2. Would they prefer more structured filming, or are they all about candid content?

Cost vs. value:

  1. Content creators are often more affordable, but the trade-off is less formal coverage and no full-length film.

  2. Professional videography is an investment, but what you receive is lasting, intentional, and emotionally rich.

What do you want after the wedding?

  1. Do you want to relive your full ceremony, speeches, and first dance 10 years from now?

  2. Or are you mainly looking for short-form videos to post the next day?

Bonus thought: Can you do both?
Some couples choose both a content creator and a videographer, allowing one to focus on the cinematic keepsake while the other captures the fun, quick-share content. If your budget allows, this can be the best of both worlds.

A Summer Celebration: The Meeds Wedding

There’s just something magical about when a bride selects a full day experience and has a summer wedding! Warm golden light, open skies, and the feeling that anything is possible. The Meeds wedding was the perfect example of all of that and more.

Held at a beautiful outdoor venue, the day was filled with sunshine, smiles, and sweet moments shared with friends and family. From the getting-ready excitement to the ceremony under the open sky, everything felt effortless and full of love.

As their photographer, I had the honor of capturing every laugh, every detail, and every little in-between moment that made the day theirs. One of my favorite parts? Watching the way they looked at each other—genuine, excited, and totally in sync.

After the wedding, the bride left this kind review:

“Sheldon was absolutely wonderful in helping make our wedding even more special! I highly recommend him in all your photography needs!”

It means the world to me to be part of such a meaningful day, and I’m so glad the Meeds trusted me to document their celebration. Wishing them nothing but joy in this new chapter of life!

If you’re planning your own summer wedding and looking for someone to capture it with care and creativity, I’d love to connect. Also I highly encourage you to check out this blog that highlights the importance of light and how it plays a role in the selection of your professional photographer

An Intimate Lakefront Wedding in Huron, Ohio

When it comes to wedding days that leave a lasting impression, few moments are as unforgettable as capturing love along the quiet shores of Lake Erie. This beautiful wedding in Huron, Ohio was the perfect combination of intimacy, authenticity, and coastal charm—and I had the honor of being there to tell the story through my lens.

A Ceremony by the Water

Set on private property tucked away in Huron, the ceremony had an effortlessly peaceful vibe. With Lake Erie as the backdrop and the sound of waves gently hitting the rocks, it felt like time slowed down. The couple stood under a simple wooden arch, surrounded by close family and friends, creating a moment that felt both sacred and naturally cinematic.

Small Guest List, Big Emotions

The beauty of a small wedding is that everything feels a little closer—closer in heart, in space, and in meaning. With fewer people present, every interaction carries weight. Every glance, every laugh, every toast was personal and intentional.

These are the kinds of weddings where I get to truly connect with the couple and their people. It’s not just about taking beautiful portraits; it’s about capturing the feeling of the day—the kind you’ll want to relive decades from now.

Why I Love Shooting in Huron

Huron is a hidden gem when it comes to Ohio weddings. Whether it’s the small-town charm, lakefront views, or quiet, private ceremony spots like this one, it’s an area that invites simplicity and calm. It’s perfect for couples who want their wedding to feel like a retreat—a break from the noise, and a step into something deeply meaningful.

Looking for a Wedding Photographer Who Gets the Vibe?

If you're planning a wedding anywhere in Ohio—or especially in hidden-gem spots like Huron—and want photography that feels timeless, artistic, and full of heart, let’s connect here . I’d love to help you tell your story.

🍂 15 Must-Know Fall Wedding Tips from Your Photographer (Ohio Edition)

Fall weddings are pure magic (they’re my favorite) — the crisp air, vibrant leaves, and cozy vibes create the perfect backdrop for your big day. But as dreamy as the season is, it also comes with a few curveballs (like early sunsets and unpredictable weather—welcome to Ohio).

As your photographer, I’ve seen firsthand what works and what can catch couples off guard. So I’ve put together my top 15 tips to help you navigate your fall wedding with ease, stay ahead of the elements, and get the absolute best photos possible.

Let’s dive in — and get you ready to make the most of your Fall “I do”!

1. Plan for Early Sunset

In Ohio, sunset hits around 6:30–7:00 PM in early fall and even earlier by late October. Schedule portraits earlier in the day to catch that beautiful golden hour glow.

2. Golden Hour Is Your Best Friend

Aim for 45–60 minutes before sunset for dreamy, warm-toned photos. Trust your photographer’s timeline suggestions — we know when the light is best!

3. Have a Backup Weather Plan

Rain and chillier temps are common. Be emotionally and logistically prepared with tents, umbrellas, and cozy indoor options for ceremonies or portraits. Some will embrace the wild Ohio weather, or often time you may have to run for cover after your ceremony

4. Keep an Emergency Blanket or Shawl

Even if your dress is sleeveless, the weather can drop quickly. A stylish shawl or blanket wrap looks great in photos and keeps you warm between shots.

5. Pick a Fall Color Palette That Pops

Deep burgundy, burnt orange, forest green, mustard, and rust contrast beautifully with Ohio’s autumn leaves — and photograph like a dream.

6. Embrace Seasonal Florals

Incorporate dahlias, mums, eucalyptus, pampas grass, and berries for full, textured bouquets with gorgeous fall tones.

7. Fall Foliage Peaks Mid-October

If you're hoping for peak color, aim for weddings between October 10–20, depending on your exact Ohio location (it varies slightly north to south).

8. Include Clear Umbrellas Just in Case

They’re practical and beautiful in photos — and they don’t block light like solid-colored ones.

9. Add Warm, Moody Lighting

Candles, lanterns, and string lights add romantic ambiance, especially as it gets darker earlier. Bonus: they photograph beautifully!

10. Schedule Hair/Makeup Early

Earlier sunset = earlier ceremony/photos. Work backward from your golden hour photo goals to plan your glam time.

11. Mind the Mud (Seriously!)

Fall can be damp. Bring bridal boots or designated photo shoes for walking between photo locations.

12. Layer Up the Bridal Party

Coordinated shawls, jackets, or flannels for your bridesmaids look adorable and keep everyone comfortable during outdoor portraits.

13. Cozy Up Your Reception Space

Think cider bars, s’mores stations, fire pits, and warm blankets on chairs — these little details feel seasonal and make for fun photo ops.

14. Opt for a Long Veil or Cape

Fall breezes = amazing veil shots. Bonus: they keep you a little warmer, too.

15. Consider a Pre-Ceremony First Look

With earlier sunsets and chillier evenings, first looks allow more time for portraits during the warmest and brightest part of the day.

A Quick Family Getaway to South Carolina – A Refreshing Break Before Getting Back to Business

Taking time off isn’t something we do often. With packed work schedules, constant projects, and never-ending to-do lists, it’s rare that we get a chance to pause, unplug, and just be present as a family. But this past week, we made it happen—and it was everything we needed.

We took a quick trip to South Carolina, and it was the perfect mix of relaxation, exploration, and memorable moments.

Sullivan’s Island: Sun, and a lot of Sand

One of our favorite parts of the trip was spending time at Sullivan’s Island Beach. It’s a spot we’ve heard so much about, and it didn’t disappoint. With calm waves, golden skies, and the kind of peaceful energy that instantly slows you down, it gave us a chance to truly unwind.

Whether we were walking along the shoreline, watching the mini build sandcastles, or simply breathing in that coastal air—it reminded us how important it is to pause and soak in these little moments.

Sweet Stops & Southern Gems

No vacation is complete without sweet treats, and we found a gem: Beardcat’s Sweet Shop (aka the beaded ice cream gelato shop). Creamy, unique flavors and a cozy coastal vibe made it the perfect stop after a sunny beach day.

We also carved out time to explore the heart of Downtown Charleston. From strolling through The Charleston City Market to discovering local artisans, every corner was full of character.

The Pineapple Fountain & A Visit to the International African American Museum

A must-see on our list was the iconic Waterfront Park—a symbol of hospitality and charm in Charleston. It was beautiful and vibrant, making for a great family photo spot.

We made a unique stop at the International African American Museum. This powerful space told stories that moved us deeply. Walking through the exhibits reminded us of the strength, history, and culture that runs through the roots of America. It was both humbling and inspiring—an experience we won’t forget.

Back to Work, Back to Booking – Let’s Make Magic Happen

Now that we’re back and refreshed from our South Carolina family vacation, I’m back in full swing and booking new projects! Whether you're looking to schedule a portrait session, engagement photos, or a branding shoot—I’d love to help bring your vision to life.

Why I Don’t Publicly List My Wedding Photography Prices (And Why It’s Not What You Think)

I once saw a bride post in a Facebook wedding group that said something like:
"ISO: Wedding photographer for $2,000."- This happened in June of 2025

I glanced down and saw the comment count… 314 comments.
I literally raised my eyebrows, let out a quiet “woah”, and just kept scrolling.

Because really… how do you even sift through that as a bride?
How do you go through hundreds of photographers, all shouting for your attention, all with different styles, price points, promises, and personalities — and not just want to throw your phone across the room and say “you know what, I’m not doing this today.” 😂

That’s the reality for a lot of brides right now. You’re excited, newly engaged (yay!), but before you can even finish your Pinterest board, you’re knee-deep in choices. Venues, dresses, catering, décor — and everywhere you look, it’s another decision and another dollar sign. Before you know it, you’ve already invested $20k+ in a venue, food, and a dream dress — and you're just getting started.

So here’s why I don’t list my full pricing on my website.

It’s not because I’m trying to be vague or play hard to get — it’s because I genuinely don’t want you to see my largest package and immediately assume it’s out of reach before even understanding what it includes. Because truthfully, it's so much more than just hours of coverage.

Here’s what I see all the time as a wedding photographer:

Couples invest so much into their day — emotionally and financially — but by the time they get to the photography piece, they’re often stretched thin. And when that happens, a few things can go sideways.

Sometimes, couples settle for someone who doesn’t have the experience or gear to keep up with a fast-paced wedding day. Other times — and this is the heartbreaking part — we see scammers come into the fold. They’ll throw together a nice Instagram page, promise the world for a low price, take a deposit (sometimes $500… $1,000… or more), and then disappear. Ghost. Vanish. And suddenly the couple is back to square one — with less budget, more stress, and this overwhelming feeling all over again.

And even when someone does show up on the day, if they don’t know how to handle tough lighting, big emotions, and all the in-between moments that matter most — you end up with a product that doesn’t reflect the energy or beauty of the day you worked so hard to create. And by the time you realize that (usually 2-3 months later), there’s no way to fix it.

Photography is more than a line item on your wedding checklist. It's the one piece that lasts long after the cake is cut and the dress is hung up. It’s how your story gets told — over and over again, for generations.

That’s why I want to talk with you first. I want to hear your vision, learn about your day, and build something that actually aligns with what you need. I offer packages that range in coverage, support, and experience — but all of them are rooted in quality, professionalism, and care. No surprises. No shortcuts.

So no — I don’t just throw up a price list online.
Because I’d rather have a real conversation with you than risk being another number in a sea of 314 comments.

Let’s take a breath, block out the noise, and figure out what actually feels right — together.

Our pricing begins at $800

10 Years In: Honest Reflections from a Wedding Photographer

After over a decade in the wedding photography world, I’ve had time to reflect on the lessons, the growth, the failures, and the truths I’ve picked up along the way. This blog isn’t a guidebook or a tutorial—it’s just real talk from someone who’s been behind the lens for a long time and still finds joy in the craft.

I’m Not a Gatekeeper—And Never Will Be

There’s one thing I want to say loud and clear: I am not, and never will be, a gatekeeper in this photography world. There’s a harmful mindset in the creative industry that views every new photographer or filmmaker as a threat. But I’ve learned that collaboration over competition is where the true growth (and peace) happens.

Even though others in this space might technically be your "competitors," the truth is—there are more than enough clients for everyone. Trying to hoard every inquiry that hits your inbox is the fastest route to burnout. When you lift others up, refer leads, or even second shoot for someone else, you're not just being kind—you're strengthening the craft that we all love

Do Quality Work—and Own Your Mistakes

Here’s another truth: I’ve made a lot of mistakes. Lost SD cards. Missed key moments. Refunded a client because I didn’t deliver what I promised. Every one of those moments felt like a punch to the gut. But they shaped me.

Over time, I learned to see trouble before it hits, to back up my work in multiple places, and to communicate clearly with clients. Mistakes will happen—but the goal is to learn from them and grow forward, not hide from them.

Build a Website. Like, a Real One.

Social media is powerful—I’ll never deny that. Instagram and TikTok are amazing tools. But they are rented spaces. If Meta or X or whatever-new-platform disappears tomorrow, and your business is 100% tied to those algorithms, you’re rebuilding from scratch.

A real website is your digital home. It gives you authority, control, SEO reach, and long-term brand equity. You can show your work the way you want, build trust, and not have to worry about likes, saves, or shifting algorithms.

Use a Client Management System (CRM)

Listen, I don't care if you shoot 10 weddings or 100. When someone is paying $3,000+ for your service, they expect (and deserve) to feel like they are the only client you have.

Investing in a CRM changed my business. It allows me to keep every contract, invoice, meeting note, and shot list organized. It helps me remember the small details, deliver consistently, and build lasting relationships. This isn’t just for your workflow—it’s for your reputation.

Let Your Editing Style Evolve

2025 | Columbus City Hall | Bride and Groom Portrait with Sheldon James Photography

2020 | Landoll’s Mohican Castle Luxury Hotel In Central Ohio | Bride and Groom with Sheldon James Photography

In the beginning, I tried to emulate the editing styles that were trending. I stuck to what I thought was “safe.” But over time, I realized that my style needed to grow with me.

Light changes. Weather changes. Venues change. And guess what? Your creative perspective will change, too. Some sessions will challenge your usual way of thinking—and that’s a gift. The more you allow yourself to evolve, the more you’ll find your voice.

Stay a Student—Always

The worst thing you can do as a creative is believe you’ve "arrived." Stay curious. Try new things. Watch YouTube tutorials. Attend workshops. Talk to other artists. Keep learning, and stay confident!

This work we do is beautiful. It's stressful, emotional, fulfilling, exhausting, and inspiring—all at once. But over the years, I’ve found that what matters most isn’t the gear or the presets—it’s how you treat people, how you own your work, and how you grow from every experience.

Here’s to another decade of capturing love and learning every step of the way.

Are you a photographer or creative struggling to bring your brand vision to life? Let’s connect and turn your ideas into something powerful and purposeful.

If you're a photographer looking to break into the wedding industry—or you're already in the game but need direction, structure, or someone to help you take it to the next level—we offer 1-on-1 mentorship sessions tailored specifically for photographers like you.

Whether you need help building your first wedding portfolio, navigating client communication, or learning how to price your work—we’re here to help you grow with honesty and intention.

How Lighting & Venue Impact Wedding Photography Style (And What Every Bride Needs to Know)

When you're planning your wedding, it's easy to get caught up in the visuals you see on Instagram or Pinterest: soft, glowing “light and airy” portraits, rich and romantic “dark and moody” edits, or clean, true-to-life timeless captures. All of these styles are beautiful—but here's the truth most photographers don’t talk about:

Your venue, lighting conditions, and time of day will impact how your wedding photos actually look—no matter what editing style your photographer uses.

Light and Airy, Partly cloudy skies, Underneath shading from the wedding venue

At Sheldon James Photography, we believe in educating our couples so they can make confident, well-informed decisions before they book their wedding photographer. Let's break this down simply, and help you understand how photography styles and lighting work together.

What Do Photography Styles Really Mean?

Before we talk about lighting, let’s define the three most common editing styles:

  • Light & Airy – Bright, soft, romantic tones. Think sunshine, pastels, and glow.

  • Dark & Moody – Rich contrast, shadows, and emotion. Often warm and dramatic.

  • Timeless & Classic – Clean edits with natural color, balanced contrast, and a true-to-life aesthetic that never feels trendy or dated.

Dark and Moody- True to tone ( Indoor Barn style wedding venue) Tight space ( dance floor approx 500-1000 sqft

While many photographers label themselves with one of these styles, the look of your final photos depends just as much on the lighting and setting of your day as it does on their editing process.

Bride standing near Silo- Near sunset, Partly cloudy day ( Soft sun lighting the brides front)

Bride and Groom First dance- Floor to celling windows with harsh sun poking through the window

Golden Hour ( lighting behind bride and groom - no eternal light source - intended lens flare - Because of the light position, could give the impression of a dark and moody

Real Talk: Lighting Changes Everything

Imagine three couples, each hiring the same photographer. One gets married at golden hour in an open field, one inside a candlelit church, and one under full noon sun with no shade.

Even if the editing style stays the same, the light tells a different story in each image.

☀️ Bright, Full Sun

  • Can create harsh shadows, uneven light, and squinting.

  • Light & Airy photographers may struggle to get softness unless there's access to shade.

  • Dark & Moody photographers can lean into contrast but risk losing detail.

  • Timeless photographers will often reposition couples for more flattering light.

Partly cloudy- Full sun day- No Shade- Ceremony entrance of Bride and the Father of the Bride

☁️ Overcast Days

  • Dreamy, soft, and even lighting across the board.

  • Light & Airy styles shine here—literally!

  • Dark & Moody editors have more room to play without harsh contrast.

  • Timeless photographers benefit from the neutral tones and skin balance.

💡 Low Light (Indoor Ceremonies or Receptions)

  • Light & Airy photographers may struggle to keep their signature brightness unless artificial lighting is used.

  • Dark & Moody photographers often embrace this ambiance—it’s their sweet spot.

  • Timeless photographers will adapt with flash or lighting to keep images sharp, clean, and natural.

Bride and Groom first dance- No natural light available- Photographer incorporates external lighting systems that operate in collection with camera system to provide adequate lighting

Why Soft Light Wins (Almost Every Time)

Harsh light (think direct midday sun) can make even the most glamorous couple look washed out or shadowy.
Soft light (like cloudy skies, window lighting, or sunset glow) flatters skin, brings out color, and creates that magical feel everyone loves.

Good photographers know how to work with both, but soft light will always be more forgiving and flattering—no matter the editing style.

Brides, Here’s What You Really Need to Consider

Instead of picking a photographer based solely on an Instagram aesthetic, ask:

  • 📍 Will my venue provide lighting that supports the look I love?

  • 📷 Have I seen full wedding galleries in different lighting conditions from this photographer?

Timeless Portraits at Dayton’s Patterson Homestead | Sheldon James Photography

At Sheldon James Photography, we believe the setting of your portrait session should be as meaningful and unique as your story. Recently, we had the pleasure of photographing a bright young boy named Lukas at the historic Patterson Homestead Museum—a hidden gem nestled right off of Brown Street in Dayton, Ohio.

A Perfect Location for Family Portraits in Dayton

The Patterson Homestead, rich with history and natural charm, served as the perfect backdrop for this portrait update. With its stately brick exterior, vintage windows, and beautifully landscaped grounds, this Dayton landmark offers an elegant mix of old-world architecture and warm natural lighting—ideal for capturing timeless family portraits.

Located just minutes from the heart of downtown Dayton and the University of Dayton campus, this venue is not only convenient but also deeply rooted in the city’s heritage. Families searching for portrait photography in Dayton, Ohio, will find this location both scenic and full of character.

Capturing Lukas’ Personality and Growth

Lukas' portrait session was all about celebrating a new chapter in his young life. His bright smile, confident stance, and playful energy were front and center as we explored the grounds of the Homestead together. His parents were looking to update their family portrait collection with something classic, yet true to who Lukas is right now—and we delivered just that.

This session was a reminder of why we do what we do. Whether it’s a young child growing up too fast or a family looking to preserve this moment in time, portrait photography allows us to tell stories that last forever.

A Classic and Chic Wedding at The Reverie in Miamisburg, Ohio

There’s something special about a wedding day that blends timeless tradition with modern elegance—and Summer and Alex’s celebration at The Reverie in Miamisburg, Ohio was exactly that. As a wedding photographer, I get to witness many love stories, but this one stood out with its refined style, joyful energy, and meaningful moments from start to finish.

The Reverie: A Dream Wedding Venue in the Dayton Area

If you’ve been searching for wedding venues near Dayton, Ohio, you’ve probably come across The Reverie—and for good reason. This upscale, all-white venue with clean architectural lines and natural light is designed with the modern couple in mind. With over 7,000 square feet of space, flexible indoor/outdoor ceremony options, and a stunning bridal suite, The Reverie makes it easy to host a wedding that’s both sophisticated and inviting.

For Summer and Alex, it was the perfect place to bring their vision to life.

The Reverie Reception Hall can accommodate 250 guests for a seated dinner

Ceremony: Tradition with a Touch of Elegance

Summer walked down the aisle in a classic, floor-length gown that looked like something out of a magazine. Alex, in a tailored black tux, couldn’t stop smiling as she made her entrance. The ceremony setup at The Reverie created a beautifully minimal backdrop, allowing their love and emotion to be the true centerpiece.

From the floral arrangements to the soft neutral color palette, every detail was thought out with care—an aesthetic that reflected both timeless tradition and chic design.

Reception: A Celebration to Remember

Once the vows were said and the rings were exchanged, it was time to party—and this group came ready. The Reverie’s open-concept layout flowed perfectly for dinner, speeches, and dancing. String lights and custom decor added warmth and personality to the space, making it feel intimate even in a large room.

Guests danced the night away, and we captured everything from emotional first dances to candid laughs on the dance floor. The love in the room was undeniable, and the energy was pure joy.

Why We Love Photographing Weddings at The Reverie

As a Dayton wedding photographer, venues like The Reverie are a dream to shoot in. The clean design, white walls, high ceilings, and large windows make every photo pop. It’s the kind of space that adapts beautifully to any wedding style—whether it’s minimal and modern, vintage-inspired, or a mix of classic and contemporary like Summer and Alex’s.

Plus, The Reverie’s location in Miamisburg, just minutes from Dayton, makes it incredibly convenient for local and out-of-town guests alike.

Urban Rodeo Vibes: A Fairmont High School Senior Photo Session in Dayton, Ohio

At Sheldon James Photography, we believe every senior deserves portraits that capture who they truly are—and this recent Kettering Fairmont High School senior session was the perfect blend of personality, style, and grit.

We headed into downtown Dayton, Ohio for an urban senior photo shoot that highlighted two completely different sides of our client’s identity: rodeo cowboy and classic prep. As a two-sport athlete from Fairmont High School in Kettering, Ohio, he wanted to represent both his rural roots and his professional side. The final gallery gave him exactly that—authentic, stylish, and unforgettable.

Look One: Rodeo Meets the City

Wearing cowboy boots, denim jeans, a Western-style button-down, and of course, his hat, this senior brought the rodeo to the city streets. The textures of Dayton’s brick buildings, metal staircases, and graffiti-lined walls created a gritty, contrasting backdrop that made the cowboy aesthetic pop in a way that was bold and editorial.

Look Two: Polished and Timeless

For his second look, we changed gears with a classic polo and khaki combo. Clean, simple, and timeless—this outfit gave us the perfect opportunity to shoot in brighter light and frame up portraits that will look amazing on graduation announcements, in family photo albums, and anywhere else he wants to show off this milestone.

Celebrating a Fairmont High School Standout

We’re so proud to have worked with this accomplished student-athlete. Between academics and two sports, he’s put in the work—and it shows. Congratulations on a great season, and best of luck as you step into adulthood with the same determination and heart.

Things I Think About When Photographing a Wedding

If you're a wedding photographer, you already know: no two weddings are the same—and that’s exactly what makes this job beautiful, frustrating, and endlessly inspiring.

After years behind the camera, shooting everything from humid July ceremonies to crisp October elopements, I’ve learned that showing up with technical skill isn’t enough. You’ve got to shoot with your whole self—your heart, your instincts, and sometimes, your inner 5-year-old.

So here are some of the things I think about when I’m documenting a wedding. These aren’t rules. These are reminders—creative cues, mindset shifts, and little ways I stay connected to the real reason I’m doing this in the first place.

1. Get What You Need, Then Lose the Rules

Of course, we all have a checklist: vows, kiss, first dance, parent toasts, cake cut. These are non-negotiables.

But once you have the essentials, break free. Lose the rules. That’s when the real creativity kicks in.

Fine detail shots of wedding dress- timeless black and white moments of Mother of the Bride and Bride, Moments that will be cherished by the next generations to come within that family.

-Lay on the ground.
-Shoot through champagne glasses.
-Tilt your camera like you forgot how to hold it.
-Snap the in-betweens: the hair being pinned, the flower girl yawning, the crooked tie fixed in a rearview mirror.

I always ask myself: “What would this look like if I didn’t care about what ‘works’?”
That’s where the creativity lives.

2. Shoot Like a 5-Year-Old

Honestly, just do it.

After the key shots are done, I tap into that childlike wonder—because five-year-olds don’t care about symmetry, they care about feelings.

They get close.
They look up.
They forget the rules.
They notice weird things like shiny shoes or the way light hits a wall.

Cincinnati city skyline with Bride and Groom out of focus - The word Cincinnati is etched out in the center of the image.

Sometimes I crouch down or stand on chairs. I play with blur. I chase light like I’m chasing a butterfly.
If you can tap into that mindset—curiosity over control—you’ll capture magic that even the couple didn’t notice on their wedding day.

3. Ask Better Questions

Before the camera ever comes out, I ask couples weird questions.

Not "What are your colors?"
But things like:

  • “If your wedding had a theme song, what would it be?”

  • “Would you rather have a golden-hour portrait or a kiss-in-the-rain photo?”

  • “Are you more summer sun or fall wind?”

Bride and Groom portrait session following the wedding ceremony outdoor backyard wedding | West Virginia

These types of questions help me understand how they feel—not just how they want to look. Though each wedding day will give you different weather elements, these questions will help you gain a new perspective of their personality.

Weddings are emotional, layered, unpredictable. If you can understand who your couple is underneath the Pinterest boards, your photos will tell their story with real depth.

4. Read the Season Like a Story

Seasonality matters. It affects more than the lighting—it changes the mood of a wedding.

☀️ Summer Weddings:

  • More light, more movement, more energy.

  • I lean into warm tones, motion blur, lens flare, and bold edits.

  • It’s sweaty, chaotic, and fun. I shoot that.

Groom entering the ceremony following behind the pastor

🍂 Fall Weddings:

  • Slower, moodier, more cinematic.

  • I lean into contrast, shadows, cozy textures, candlelight, and emotional weight.

  • I look for the quiet moments: fingers intertwined, soft glances, deep breaths.

Bride and Groom portrait session near The Cleveland Railway Bridge" (also known as the "Old Coast Guard Station Bridge") near the West Bank of the Flats or near the Nautica Entertainment Complex on the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ask yourself, “What does this season feel like?” Then let your editing, angles, and pacing reflect it.

5. Document for Now and Forever

One of my favorite questions to ask a couple is:

“What’s more important to you: a photo that could go viral this week, or one your grandchildren will cherish in 40 years?”

Sometimes, you have to go to the Flower man vs picking a traditional flower girl, You just know there’s going to be a party at this event - The Estate At Sunset Farm | Centerville Ohio

Sometimes the answer is both—and that’s okay.

But it helps me know when to go hard on trend-forward content (like drone shots and flash edits) and when to pull back and focus on timeless, story-first photography.

Being able to balance relevance and permanence is what sets a good wedding photographer apart from a great one.

6. Stay Curious, Stay Human

The technical side matters. I love a sharp prime lens and golden-hour backlighting as much as anyone.

But honestly? The most important tool I carry is curiosity.

Bride and Groom letting loose and dancing with friends and family at Polen Farm, a small, quaint and rustic wedding venue | Kettering Ohio

  • I watch the room.

  • I listen more than I talk.

  • I step back when a moment is unfolding.

  • I move in when no one else is watching.

Being a wedding photographer in 2025 is not about following a style guide. It’s about capturing something so personal it feels like poetry when they look at it five years later. You have to think about it, you’re likely going to spend the majority of the day with your client, you will want them to invite you in as an honorary member of their wedding party.

Final Thoughts: Be the Photographer You Needed

Every wedding I shoot, I remember the responsibility I have—not just to make it look good, but to make it real.

If you’re a photographer: trust your eye, trust your gut, and never stop experimenting.

Shoot what’s obvious. Then shoot what’s invisible.

Because that’s where the story lives.

SynkedUP

SynkedUP: Empowering Landscape and Outdoor Living Companies to Thrive in Today’s Business Climate

As the world continues to adjust to the post-COVID landscape, businesses across all industries face an undeniable reality: the strategies that worked during the pandemic may not suffice in today’s market. While people once had large budgets to spend, many companies are now hunkering down, finding unique ways to generate leads, and striving to make smarter decisions with their resources. This shift has made it clear that efficiency, adaptability, and a data-driven approach are key to success—particularly for blue-collar contractors and landscape businesses.

SynkedUP Software Company Logo

At the recent SynkedUP Business Summit, hosted at the Marriott hotel in Dayton, Ohio, leaders and experts gathered to share insights on these challenges, providing valuable tools and strategies to help contractors and landscape professionals not only survive but thrive. The event was beautifully captured by Sheldon James Photography, and it brought to light how companies can leverage technology and sharpen their business operations to stay competitive ethically.

Group Photo of 2024 SynkedUP Administration

A New Mindset for Business Success

One of the key takeaways from the SynkedUP Summit was the emphasis on mindset and upholding standards. In today’s fast-paced world, running a successful landscape business requires more than just hard work—it demands intentionality and efficiency. The speakers highlighted a crucial distinction: creating accountability through standards, not discipline. By developing and upholding a clear set of standards, business owners can foster a culture of accountability that doesn’t rely on constant oversight.

Keynote Speaker: Greg Crabtree, Author of Simple Numbers

This shift in mindset can transform how contractors run their businesses. For instance, owners often wear multiple hats: answering the phone, handling invoicing, conducting photoshoots, building estimates, and doing admin work. But is this the best use of their time? SynkedUP helps companies find ways to automate processes, block out time for essential tasks, and optimize labor. It’s about moving from being the only one who does everything to empowering a team and system that can support your growth.

Keynote Speaker: Rob Murray speaking on "Sales and Marketing" - Intrigue Media
YouTube Channel

Know Your Numbers: Job Cost Analysis and Profitability

Another major focus of the summit was on the importance of knowing your numbers. SynkedUP isn’t just a software solution; it can serve as your analyst, breaking down job cost analysis and helping you understand the ins and outs of your financials. As many contractors know, the true profit per hour often gets overlooked in the day-to-day hustle. Without a clear understanding of job costs, it’s easy for profits to slip through the cracks.

Keynote speaker: Jeff Joiner speaks on Professional Development

By leveraging SynkedUP’s tools, companies can gain real-time insights into job costs, labor optimization, and profit margins. This allows contractors to make informed, data-driven decisions. As the speakers put it, “Normalcy is a gift.” It’s about creating a standard of excellence, knowing your numbers, and ensuring that each hour of work is not only productive but profitable.

Keynote Speaker and Owner, Jeremy Swihart, of J Squared Outdoor Lighting and Living

Creating Balance: Time, Family, and Automation

A significant challenge for many entrepreneurs is balancing business demands with personal life. One theme that resonated throughout the summit was finding ways to spend less time working *in* the business and more time *on* the business—and ultimately with family. As contractors, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind, but automation and delegation are critical to achieving long-term success and balance.

Weston Zimmerman, CEO and Co-Founder at SynkedUP, Landscaping Business Management Software

SynkedUP can streamline many of the processes that currently require the owner’s direct involvement. Whether it’s automating invoicing, managing estimates, or optimizing workflows, their platform gives owners the tools to focus on what matters most—whether that's driving new leads, building customer relationships, or spending time with loved ones.

      Turning Leads Into Loyal Clients

Post-COVID, generating leads and turning them into long-term clients is no easy feat. At the SynkedUP Summit, the importance of fast turnaround times and showing more gratitude was emphasized. Clients want to feel valued, and in a competitive market, responsiveness and a personal touch can make all the difference.

In today’s landscape, businesses can’t afford to be complacent. Where budgets were once freely available, clients now scrutinize every purchase. That means businesses have to find unique and creative ways to close deals, whether through faster project completion, more transparent communication, or offering a superior client experience.

SynkedUP: A Game-Changer for Contractors

SynkedUP’s mission is clear: to end entrepreneurial poverty for blue-collar contractors by making them profitable. They do this by equipping contractors with the knowledge and tools to better understand their finances, improve efficiency, and make decisions driven by data rather than guesswork. Whether it’s through job cost analysis, labor optimization, or automation, SynkedUP helps contractors run their businesses smarter.

Image of Associate to Scovill''s Landscape Contractors

The company is passionate about helping contractors regain their time, avoid burnout, and enjoy the privilege of being a business owner, even during tough times. When entrepreneurs are empowered with the right tools, they can grow their businesses, support their employees, and—most importantly—spend more time with their families.

As we navigate this new business climate, landscape and outdoor living companies need to adapt and optimize their operations to stay competitive. SynkedUP’s software provides the essential tools and insights that contractors need to thrive—not just by working harder, but by working smarter. By embracing a mindset of accountability, leveraging data to understand their business, and optimizing their processes, contractors can not only survive but grow in this challenging environment.

For those looking to streamline their operations and maximize profitability, SynkedUP is here to help. Reach out to SynkedUP to learn more about their upcoming business summits and how they can transform your business.

A Magical Wedding at The Steam Plant: A Celebration of Love, Family, and Innovation

Michael and Jasmine's wedding day at The Steam Plant in Dayton, Ohio, was nothing short of extraordinary. Surrounded by the warmth of family and friends, the couple celebrated their love in a ceremony filled with personal touches, elegance, and a nod to the groom's passion for engineering.

The groomsmen, dressed impeccably, wore boutonnieres that were more than just floral accents. These boutonnieres incorporated small gears, artfully designed to reflect Michael’s love for innovation and engineering. The delicate details added a unique flair to the formal attire, showcasing his personality and interests in a subtle but meaningful way.

The Steam Plant, an industrial-inspired venue, served as the perfect backdrop for this celebration. The exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and rustic charm all gave a nod to the bygone era of industrialism, yet maintained an elegance that highlighted the couple’s modern love story. The venue's character added a distinct atmosphere to the day, reflecting both strength and beauty.

After a heartwarming ceremony, Michael and Jasmine cut a stunning two-tier purple wedding cake, which echoed the elegance of the day. It was a sweet symbol of their union and a lovely centerpiece for the reception. The couple later shared a formal, choreographed first dance that left their guests mesmerized, perfectly capturing their connection and joy.

Rather than a traditional departure in their own car, the newlyweds were whisked away in style. They rode through the city in a beautifully restored vintage Model T wagon, its "Just Married" sign flapping proudly in the breeze. The choice of such a timeless vehicle added a sense of grandeur to their exit, as they waved goodbye to family and friends, enjoying a moment to soak in the excitement of their first evening as husband and wife.

As Michael and Jasmine embark on their new journey together, we offer them many blessings for a future filled with love, happiness, and shared dreams. May their bond grow stronger with each passing day, and may they always remember the love and joy that surrounded them on this unforgettable day.
